1. What is Botox?
Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin is capable of causing a chemical denervation. It blocks the neurotransmitter that carries nerve impulses to the muscles, inhibiting an excessive muscle contraction where it is injected. These effects are temporary, lasting an average of between 4 and 6 months. This temporary relaxation effect is used in the treatment of certain neurological disorders, and in aesthetic medicine for the correction and elimination of facial wrinkles.

There are several types of botulinum toxin, depending on the strain of Clostridium botulinum where it is obtained. Botulinum toxin type ‘A’ purified is the most commonly used for medical or cosmetic application. Botox must be applied by an expert physician who knows in-depth, the facial musculature and anatomical variations that may occur in patients. Clínica Puértolas uses the medicine approved for wrinkles: the botulinum toxin sold as Vistabel ® or Azzalure ®. The products are sold directly by a licensed pharmacy which must be under the tutelage of the Ministry of Health (Department of Pharmacy and Health Products).

2. When is treatment with botulinum toxin recommended?
Traditionally in aesthetic medicine, it was used to correct expression lines and wrinkles in the upper third of the face in areas such as; eyebrows, horizontal wrinkles on the forehead, or crow’s feet. Over time its use has evolved, and now it is used at different levels in accessory muscles to embellish the look. Even for some strategic retouches in other regions of the face:
-Bitterness or marionettes lines: these are folding lines that mark the lower third of the face, from the corners of the mouth to the chin. Those muscles can be corrected by injecting a small amount of Botox. A filling product can also be used to insert filling in each line.
-Perioral lines: this groove goes from the nostrils to the corner of the mouth. The muscles that cause this line are the nasogenal muscles and levator labii. For an optimal and lasting correction, it’s necessary to use a filler material to lift the furrow and to insert a small amount of Botox, which relaxes the power of both muscles.
-Prominent Chin: a chin too thrown upwards can be corrected by relaxing the muscle with botulinum toxin. With this treatment the profile and potential wrinkles are improved.
Botulinum toxin is also used to treat hyperhidrosis, which is excessive sweating, mainly in hands and underarms. In these patients, botulinum toxin acts by blocking the secretion of sweat glands, making it very effective in removing sweat. This effect lasts for between 6 and 9 months, without any harmful side effects.

3. Benefits and visible results

It is the nonsurgical treatment most commonly used in facial aesthetic medicine. The use of Botox in aesthetic medicine is incredibly popular today because it is a simple procedure to perform and achieves great results in expert hands. Botulinum toxin has been used for over twenty years to treat neurological and vision problems. Each year, tens of thousands of patients are treated with Botox to correct or ameliorate various conditions.
The results are quick, the toxin is set between 48 and 72 hours and thereafter the results are already visible, giving a natural look to the face without removing expressiveness. It is a safe and effective long-term treatment.
This facial treatment can be applied together with other medical and cosmetic treatments, such as radiofrequency (Thermage), Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or facial fillers.

4. Advantages over other treatments:

You can apply it any time of year. There is no contraindication from exposure to sun, and it is only to be avoided on the day of injection.
It doesn’t require anaesthesia.
Is virtually painless because it is applied with very fine needles.
It removes wrinkles, giving a more relaxed and youthful appearance naturally.
The results are immediate. The best effects are appreciated between the third and fifth day, and the final result is accomplished 10-15 days later.
The effects last 4-6 months and disappear gradually without being noticeable.

5. Side effects and contraindications

When practiced correctly the treatment does not involve significant risks. The adverse effects of Botox are rare and may include:
